Our neighbors to the south are a big Petaluma family living on a sprawling old dairy farm. There are at least three generations of dairy farmers on the land and they have numerous relatives scattered all around the county and the state. They don’t milk cows there anymore but they keep the traditions alive. Deer hunting season is a big deal here and, to accommodate all of the September action, they created the Red Hill Gun Club a little over 75 years ago. It’s not really a club, rather it’s more like their version of our “party barn.” Nothing about it is fancy or slick, but it functions well for cookouts and beer parties and the annual volunteer fire department barbecue chicken dinner every Father’s Day. The family lets a few other community groups use it for occasional gatherings in the summertime, but it’s mainly just for family gatherings. Of course, when Mark says he has “just the immediate family over” there might be 200 people there. All of the walls and tree trunks are covered with antlers, and there are a few memorial plaques around to remind us of ancestral pillars of the family. Right now the place is buttoned up for the winter, and Monkey the cat noses around the fallen limbs and damp leaves in front of the clubhouse.
